“Sorry, we’re staring at your taco” he said apologetically. “No apologies needed, my taco is delicious” I responded with a wink. I only wish it had been a flirtatious come-on by some tall, dark and handsome dude but, just my singleitis-suffering IndieGirl luck, it was a gay couple salivating over my double decker broccoli taco. I was seated at the long marble bar at No. 7 on Greene Avenue in Brooklyn where I couldn’t remember the last time my taste buds had experienced such a mind-blowing concoction of flavors. It reawakened my need to burst out of my "missionary-style" eating habits and experience some good 'ol gastronomic kink.
In upscale "gordita" style and nestled between a soft flour tortilla and a crunchy corn taco shell, was a broccoli puree with feta cheese, pine nuts and black bean paste. The flavors playfully teased my mouth and aroused an all-consuming pleasure I hadn't experienced in awhile. Not to mention the smooth lubricating blend of rye, maple and bitters (Deep Mountain Sazerac) that warmed my soul and even revived my latent lady parts with a expectant surge of energy. While noshing in pure satisfaction and bumping my head to artists like Biggie, Beastie Boys and Run DMC who played discreetly in the background, I was in a vortex of oral and auditory ecstasy, reminding me to break free of my comfortable and predictable eating routines, expand the breadth of possibility and dare live a little!
Like any great and long overdue love affair, I didn’t want the experience to end. The night was still young and I was eager to see the restaurant fill with prospective IndieBoys who might indulge me in conversation and, hopefully, take advantage of my weakened inhibitions. I allowed that last sip of Sazerac to linger in my glass until it became unbearable. I had to finish it off. Ahhh...the ecstasy was masturbatory as usual but pleasurable nonetheless.
Time for the walk of shame which, for me, meant stumbling home alone at 7:00pm on a Saturday night.
