There’s never been a Coelho book that didn’t both entertain me and serve as a catalyst for reassessing my thoughts on topics such as love, courage, faith, freedom or forgiveness. (A true Gemini, I always love a man that stimulates my mind). And although "The Winner Stands Alone" is far from one of my faves, I feel that Coelho adeptly turns an intricately told and suspenseful murder mystery into a story about the cost of our obsession with fame, fortune, power and status. Set at the Cannes Film Festival we learn that ambition based on such hollow obsessions is futile; leaving you unfulfilled, discontent... or dead.
It’s amazing how different yet relatable each character is. A Russian millionaire and Middle Eastern fashion czar that built their empires from nothing. An American actress desperate for her turn as a leading lady. A small-town detective relishing in solving the big-city crime that found its way to Cannes. And a precocious young model on the brink of super-model status.
We all want happiness and success. But what defines happiness and success for you? At what cost and at what length will you go to attain it?
