First impressions can sometimes be misleading and outside appearances certainly lose their value when you find a relationship that just works. That's how I feel about my on-going love affair with Dr. Jeffrey Chen Acupuncture.
Dr. Chen's office is an unimpressive looking nook, smack dab in the middle of Chinatown NYC. His spot is completely devoid of pretense or zen-like comfort. In fact, it’s more like a bachelor pad version of a holistic medical office. But the healing work he does using acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is incomparable and well worth overlooking the facade. I’ve visited him for everything from a sprained foot to depression from a broken heart.
Before needling you, Dr. Chen really takes his time to get to know you. How often can you say that about a guy? And his interest is sincere because, according to TCM, the root cause of illnesses must be treated; not the symptoms. So, the first step includes an in-depth intake form about your lifestyle and habits, where you have to admit all your dirty little secrets. Yet he still doesn't judge you. Refreshing. Next, he asks you to stick out your tongue which he scrutinizes carefully and then checks your pulse on both wrists. After determining his course of treatment, he escorts you into a cramped treatment room with a view of a brick wall, where he needles you. Once all the needles are in he says, like clockwork, "Don't go nowhere". Yep, gotta love a little attempt at humor! His sincerity makes me laugh every time, though.
Besides the fact that he's such an incredible healer, Dr. Chen is gentle, patient, dedicated and caring. Any man like that deserves my heart... and can poke me anytime.
