The Best Kind of MELTdown

Turn Ons: My introduction to MELT® was a simple reminder that nurturing my body doesn't have to require an expensive trip to the spa.

Turn Offs: I was secretly scouting a new-agey, organic-eating, earthy-crunchy hottie for a possible love connection. But, half of the men had dentures and the other half sported Jesus beards and body odor.

I remember when the reality of separation and divorce from my EX was still a fresh wound that cut so deeply my body went into protective shock.  As much as my spirit felt lost and ungrounded, my physical body went numb -- especially my feet.  Years later, and after much emotional healing, I finally have the pleasure of inhabiting my body fully again.  But with that comes the awareness of the physical pain of being a pavement stomping New Yorker, professional dancer and aerial artist.  So, when I heard of this MELT® workshop specifically designed to nurture the feet and hands, I was all over it.

The free introductory workshop I attended at the New York Open Center seemed to attract active mid-lifers like myself and sedentary seniors seeking relaxation or relief from chronic pain.  After being provided a small, squishy ball we followed our instructor through a systematic, step-by-step sequence of movements that included pressing, squeezing, rolling, massaging and gliding the ball along a specific pattern on our feet and hands.  The goal was to stimulate optimal nerve function, hydrate connective tissue and increase blood flow. My feet and hands felt surprisingly more vital, invigorated, full and functional.  Even my under-appreciated pinky fingers and toes felt like they served their own unique purpose in grip and gait.  But the effects on my entire body were absolutely amazing and well worth the minimal effort it took to achieve this comforting sense of energized relaxation.  And just those few MELT® techniques reminded me that, by taking just a brief amount of time to nurture even those small but important parts of my body, promotes overall wellness and the best kinda meltdown ever!
