Happily Ever After

I’m a New Yorker. I thrive on the frenetic pulse created by its 8million inhabitants driven by our individual stories of ambition, hope and success as much as our apathy, desperation and failure. We get things done quickly, purposefully and with an exclamation point. We don’t pause. We don’t take deep breaths. We just keep moving.

And that was the energy I brought to Turks & Caicos when I moved here just 2 months ago. But there’s no frenzy to keep pace with. Only the type of tranquility you would expect from a private resort island with a population of, say, 300; all of whom are guests of the resort or employees like myself. But the buzz of the city remained in my veins, my mind was still bogged down with clutter and my senses were numb to their surroundings. Because that’s how I existed in NYC -- on autopilot. I was carrying an unnecessary intensity that didn’t match the subtle vibration of the island. I felt overstimulated and incapable of stillness. So, in typical Keex fashion, I added something to my to-do list: Take a leisurely walk and bring your senses!

I didn’t pass a single soul. So rather than being distracted by the complexity of human energies and our relationships, I became overwhelmed by the beauty, playfulness and sensuality of nature.  I could finally appreciate Turks & Caicos' resplendent combination of lush greens, tropical blues and every other jewel tone in the spectrum. I even took notice of the sweetly scented air, inhaled deeply, and exhaled... fully. Stillness filled my veins and emptied my mind. And ever since that walk, I’ve make a conscious effort to notice something new everyday. It’s my daily meditation.

What I enjoy now is the kaleidoscope of new images created daily by the sun, ocean and clouds. I find myself easily entranced by the seductive lull of the ocean and the graceful way tree branches sway at the caress of the wind. I hear the flirtatious calls of birds and the bravado of their heavily flapping wings. I laugh at the coquettish nature of dragonflies who seem to crave attention but quickly flit away. And the coy lizards who play hard to get behind their camouflage masks. There are so many stories in nature!

This meditation stimulates a sense of childlike discovery, inspires my creativity and fills me with immense gratitude. I cherish this once elusive feeling of 'being present' and am quite sure it's adding years to my life while adding pleasure to each day.
