Turn Ons: The nostalgia for the 50s & 60s bohemian culture, when The White Horse was the hang out spot of great writers and artists .
Turn Offs: It’s a bar with bar food. Great for getting drunk on beer and hard liquor and sobering up on mildly decent grub.

I went to the White Horse Tavern for a late dinner knowing full well it’s a watering hole and not a fine culinary destination. I’m not a belly-up-to-the-bar kinda gal but I was hoping this West Village landmark would be overflowing with brooding, scruffy and disheveled looking writer types. I thought a fling with a tormented artist might be fun.
REALITY CHECK! I was definitely surrounded by dudes but the only hot ones were the basketball players on the two TV screens perched above the bar. It’s all good. I decided to objectively absorb the atmosphere while eating my cheeseburger, steak fries and cheap red wine. (I haven’t been a beer drinker since a nasty keg stand incident in High School).
No pretenses. No frills. Just history embedded in its dark wood paneled walls. And amid a mix of college sweatshirts and business suits were loud conversations over rock music. The service was okay and the food was functional although I’m sure it would’ve been better had I been under the influence like the rest of the crowd. Would I return? Sure! But with a group of friends and no expectations of a romp with a literary genius.
