If the tangy-sweet scent of smack-yo-mama barbecue were a pheromone, Blue Smoke and I would undoubtedly share an instant chemical attraction that would lead to a passionate love affair. It wasn’t bad looking either for a casual, down-home, suck your fingers, wet nap required dining. And if size matters, it’s HUGE! It boasts 2 floors of ample seating with plenty of charm and good ol’ Southern hospitality to match.
I devoured my Applewood Smoked Organic Chicken, mashed potatoes with crispy onions and a side of braised collard greens with bacon. It was as if the lovin’ was so good that I couldn’t get enough of it, fast enough. And like any adept lover, my meal teased and titillated my senses with flavors and textures. The Kansas City barbecue sauce was mouthwateringly delicious and clung to my tender, juicy meat with desperate passion. The crispy onions were the perfect complement to the thick and smooth, buttery mashed potatoes. The collards had the perfect amount of vinegar, sweet and spice.
This spot had me so open that my prudish tongue got all experimental and strayed from my usual red wine. Instead, I dared my taste buds to a gin cocktail and sipped on the unanimous staff recommendation: the Porch Swing. The 3 main ingredients include: gin, their signature lemonade and fresh slices of cucumber. So cool and refreshing after my hot and steamy love affair.
Next time I’ll head downstairs to the Jazz Standard for their weekly lineup of live music. After all, I do love artsy types...
