Turn-Ons: The Pole Speak performers reeled me in with authentic personal expression & brave storytelling through pole dancing.
Turn-Offs: Only that I was a spectator rather than a performer. I'd love to "speak" my Indie Girl journey through pole.

I was PMSing and quickly settling into a "woe-is-me" attitude on my couch. All I wanted was a pity party for one, complete with red wine, dark chocolate and freshly popped popcorn to soothe my soul. The thought of putting on an emotional mask to go out into public felt exhausting. But I'd already purchased a ticket to see "Break Through" presented by Pole Speak at Body & Pole. And I did wanna see this show! (If only they could perform in my living room.)
What a relief to be greeted with complimentary red wine and the opportunity to escape into the beautifully grotesque world of a Sum Seen photography exhibit featuring dark and twisted hybrid images of the Pole Speak performers wearing BodyBinds. Once ushered into the performance space I sat amongst familiar faces from pole dance class and my facebook pole community. And that's when Pole Speak tore off my emotional mask, broke through my heart and made me feel the stuff I didn't really wanna feel. But the tears proved far more soothing than red wine, dark chocolate and freshly popped popcorn.
That's the beauty of dance. That's the beauty of honest storytelling through movement. It's the silent revealer of the human condition; the largest common denominator of humanity itself. Despite gender, age, race or class we all experience loss, betrayal, rejection, fear and loneliness. And as each Pole Speak performer bravely relied upon freestyle pole dancing (pure improvisation!) to tell personal stories of their own pain, fears, weaknesses and vulnerabilities, I felt deeply connected to them. I witnessed them transform break-downs into break-throughs because they dared to expose their truth rather than hide behind a mask. Life lesson learned... again.
