As much as I hate to admit it, my lifestyle seems to have become purely pragmatic and devoid of any feminine frill. All traces of girlishness seem to have sadly disappeared. I mean, what happened to the days of perusing NYC boutiques and creatively piecing outfits together as a form of personal expression? And what happened to my fascination with glossy magazines to lap up the latest trends in fashion and beauty? And what happened to gettin' my face did at MAC make-up counters and buying every variation of beauty they sold me? Nowadays I feel more like a fashionista stuck wearing Lululemon and a frizzy ponytail. I'm not sure when I morphed into this frumpy, middle-aged version of Keex but I think it's high time to become at least little high-maintenance.
I'm not even sure if you would call getting a mani-pedi "high maintenance" considering most women my age seem to indulge in this ritual every two weeks. Meanwhile, I know absolutely nothing about the latest in nail couture. My only reference is my instagram feed which is flooded with phalanges adorned in everything from bedazzled gel nails to super-fancy nail art creations with Hello Kitty or the Brooklyn Nets logo in their most diminuitive forms.
So I decided to up my girl-game and step into The Polish Bar in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill. I enjoyed the simple frustration of overwhelming color selections from Zoya, O.P.I. and Essies, before plunking my frumpy ass down on the chocolate banquette seating and submerging my feet in hot water. While I flipped through the latest fashion magazines and salivated over the idea of a total makeover, I had my nails shaped, cuticles cut, callouses buffed, legs and feet massaged and moisturized and my tips decorated with toxin-free Zoya polish... with a hint of sparkly glitter. How's that for girly?
Note to self: girlish indulgences are far from frivolous. Pragmatism must be balanced with pleasure (sometimes of the sparkly kind.)
