I was cordially greeted with "Table for one?" Normally, that wouldn't sting. But, it did. Yes, table for one... for the last friggin' six years of my life, thank you very much! "Yes" I responded, with an equally cordial (but strained) smile and took my seat, quickly noticing that I was the only one dining alone. Thank god it was happy hour and Nero Doro has a delicious Montepulciano.
I felt like a glaring oddity in this relaxed Italian cafe with exposed brick, dark woods and bold, colorful artwork. First of all, I'm pretty sure I was the only person that ordered a burger at a place known for its pastas and paninis. And while everyone else seemed to be enjoying their arrabiatas, bologneses, meaningful conversations and laughter, the little voices in my head were in attack mode. I was a loser. And I had nothing to assuage my loneliness except for my second glass of Montepulciano.
Adding insult to injury, the couple next to me was making out. Like, in my face! Okay, they weren't exactly making out as much as the husband kept gazing lovingly at his wife and kissing her tenderly on her neck, her cheek, her forehead and her lips. It was absolutely nauseating (read: jealousy inducing). I felt consumed with PDA envy and memories of long ago when I was loved. Six years have passed since my divorce and I'm still wondering whether or not I'll ever fall in love again.
I pretended not to watch them "making out", while eating my burger, sipping my wine and wondering how you say "lonely" in Italian.
