Happily Ever After
The pop of a champagne cork in the quiet of a secluded beach. A toast to another year of love as the sun traces a brilliant path along the still, aquamarine water and tucks itself behind the clouds. The gentle caress of the heat at dusk as the powdery cool sand embraces our feet. A celebratory kiss.
Nope, not me. I was alone as usual. I was simply a spectator of love; reminded of its existence while struggling to find my Indie Girl Spirit to escape the suffocating jealousy during my weekend getaway at one of the most romantic settings I've ever been in: Parrot Cay resort in Turks & Caicos. But I appreciated the romance as much as I envied it. It promised possibility.
I'm convinced I was the only single person vacationing at this paradise resort. It's not really the place to see and be seen. It's an oasis for anonymity. A place to unwind in the calm, picturesque beauty of a remote island with 3.5 miles of pristine beaches and one of the top-rated spas in the world, COMO Shambhala. A place to be pampered by the tranquility of nature or the generous staff that anticipates your needs well before you do. A place to collect seashells along the shore or snorkel at the pristine barrier reef. A place to bike leisurely along the pebble pathway or workout vigorously in the Pilates studio, yoga pavilion or gym. A place to indulge in five-star meals while overlooking the infinity pool... that overlooks the sea. A place to find your bliss!
I was reminded that, as lonely as New York can feel at times, I'm never really alone in a city of eight million. But in Parrot Cay, with a population of maybe 300, I was definitely alone. Yet it was a surprising and welcome relief from the grind and frenetic pace of NY that keeps me in a constant state of fight or flight. My weekend getaway made me realize that time and space alone in tropical paradise is truly a sensuous experience; even without someone to kiss.
