For the last few months I’ve been submerged in a bubble of picturesque beauty, long periods of solitude and self-reflection, and teaching Pilates to a fascinating collection of international guests who often have nothing on their to-do lists other than spa treatments, seaside sun bathing, stargazing and cocktails. It’s a completely different bubble than New York’s gritty beauty, non-stop pace, and teaching Pilates to a fascinating collection of international clients who are doing their best to squeeze in a 55min workout. While I’m adjusting comfortably to expat life I sometimes catch myself wanting to recreate the comforts of home. My Thai housemates do it as they sit around our large dining table sharing traditional Hot Pot. My Balinese housemates do it as they recreate celebrations from home like the rituals of Galungan which commemorates the victory of good over evil.
And me? One of my "sacred rituals" was finding the nearest cafe with free wifi and a decent burger so I can fill up my empty computer screen with memories, dreams and lessons learned. Of course, no such place exists on our isolated island so, on my day off I took a boat-ride to the main island of Provodenciales and walked from the dock to the nearest resort called Blue Haven. Sitting at the Blue Haven cafe with my laptop, burger and fries felt beautifully reminiscent of my life in Brooklyn. I found my comfort zone. It wasn’t about finding the juiciest or most flavorful burger or the crispiest of fries. It was about a feeling. I found that feeling with a spectacular view. And while that view was drastically different from home, I felt at home.
