Living in Turks & Caicos has inspired me to see nature through the eyes of a child again. I see clouds shaped liked dogs and dragons. I count stars and make wishes on them. I dream of lounging on crescent moons. And I listen to the secrets of trees as their leaves rustle through the wind. Even within this small island landscape, there's constant change which triggers my imagination and appreciation for the creativity found in nature.
Visiting the main island of Provodenciales on my day off turned nature-gazing into a day of traveler-gazing; burnished orange vacationers in colorful resort wear, wide brimmed hats and sunglass. While sipping coffee from my outdoor seat at Lemon 2 Go I watched them peruse the Salt Mill shops searching for local treasures and photographing memories. Across the street, Paradise Arts captured my attention so I followed suit, strolling into the small gallery that represents local artists who transform local beauty and inspiration into oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, photography, jewelry, ceramics, basket weaving and hand-crafted dolls. I was honestly mesmerized by the diverse talent which capture the environment, people and vibe of this island so perfectly.
But what struck me more was that most of the artists were ex-pats. I couldn't help but wonder where all the local talent was. I wanted to see Turks & Caicos through the eyes of the "belongers" not just people like me whose senses and creativity have been triggered by our adopted home.
