I discovered this whimsical, candy-colored, carnival of an ice cream shop that instantly awakened my inner child while appealing to my mature taste buds that can easily distinguish between a decent dessert and a decadent dessert. My wide eyes darted wildly around this imaginative little enclave called Melt, known for more than just serving the best homemade ice cream on the island (thank god, because I’m lactose intolerant!) but for being a place to linger, indulge the senses and shop for eclectic gifts. Like a kid, I wanted to touch, taste and buy everything because every bit of wall and shelf space was appointed with something for pure entertainment and pleasure. My indecisive mind couldn’t decide what to do first. Do I sit at the big, inviting circular bar that begs for conversations with strangers while indulging in cookies, cakes and scones made daily from scratch? Or do I sit on one of the comfy velvet couches with my laptop and a cup of coffee while taking advantage of the free wi-fi service? Or, do I shop for fun stuff like snarky greeting cards and wall art or colorful children’s books and chiffon tutus for aspiring little ballerinas?
Decisions, decisions. I bellied up to the bar. And while my coconut scone and black coffee may have seemed far from decadent amongst options like Hazelnut Heaven Sundae, rich and creamy blended iced coffees or champagne with strawberry caviar, I couldn’t have chosen a more delicious pairing. Then, while sipping on my full-bodied black and noshing on every moist crumb, I heard the familiar sound of Boston accents enter Melt; flavoring my experience with a little taste of (close to) home. It was exciting to watch as their eyes danced around with the same wonderment as mine, until the baby grand piano caught their attention. And suddenly my dessert was accompanied by an impromptu concert from a classically trained pianist and conversations with strangers.
