Who knew that Extra Fancy Memphis Fried Chicken and a plate of greens at Marietta's would spark this epiphany: I need to add a little Southern drawl to my life and stop trying to accomplish everything in a New York minute!
The alchemist in the kitchen, Chef Damian, remarkably suspended my frenetic thoughts and hypnotized me long enough to surrender to my senses and savor the culinary experience of flavors and textures when ingeniously paired. Once I got past not wanting to disturb the artistic presentation on my plate, I got lost in the crispy crunch of the spectacularly seasoned, golden brown exterior of tender chicken (juiciness courtesy of the lemon-honey brine). Yet there wasn't even an ounce of grease to spill down my chin and expose my savagery. My side dish, a mix of kale, chicory, endive and beet greens was a surprising mix of bitter, tangy and sweet and reason enough for me to return. For dessert, all I wanted was bourbon. Neat. I let its smokey sweetness slide across my tongue and leave a little heat in my throat as I nodded my head to Erykah Badu and spoke to strangers at the bar.
Clearly I need to create more sacred rituals like this, dedicated exclusively to savoring moments and resting my mind enough to allow for the natural ebb and flow of my thoughts and to welcome the unexpected. Simply being shouldn't induce guilt. There's value in surrendering and seeing what comes... spontaneously. Perhaps an epiphany! The to-do list can wait... at least for a good meal with a Southern drawl.
