When you live at a destination getaway that’s perfected the picture of privacy and romance; where the majority of guests are honeymooners or people celebrating decades of marriage; and where couples come to my Pilates classes hand-in-hand and engage in friendly competition during the Series of 5. And when you’re suffering from a tricky diagnosis of single-itis plus PMS... it’s time to get off the island and hang with other common folk who might also be single, divorced and lonely.
It took a buggy, a boat ride and a cab to finally arrive at Lemon 2 Go in the Grace Bay area of Provodenciales, Turks & Caicos. With a name like Lemon 2 Go, I certainly wasn’t expecting to walk into a charming little coffee shop with a romantic Parisian flair. Of course, I’ve never actually been to Paris but I only imagine a French coffee shop to be just like this. Like walking into a creatively stocked pantry full of fresh cut flowers, scented candles and luxurious lotions that you wanna buy for the packaging alone. And in front of the coffee brewing station, a chalkboard menu listing their individually brewed cups of coffee, bold espressos, frothy cappuccinos, lattes and specialty teas to pair with an almond croissant, muffin, or a chocolate chunk cookie. Or, a fresh fruit or veggie smoothie with a sandwich wrap, hummus or three bean salad.
PMS necessitated the comfort of a full-bodied drip coffee and a chocolate chip cookie (okay, two!) which I savored like a last kiss behind the shade of a white lattice fence with wandering ivy. And just as I became lost in my own version of romance, in walks a couple... hand-in-hand. Figures. But they were a sweet little older couple from Fort Worth,Texas with wrinkled up faces from age and too much sun. Turks & Caicos had been their home for four years. I didn’t ask how long they’d been married. But they were happy and still had love in their eyes as they talked and sipped coffee together. I closed my eyes and made a wish that one day that would be me.
